Josesito Lopez 10-9

Round 2: Cleaner punches landed by Victor Ortiz. 10-9 Ortiz

Round 3: Lopez changes the pace of the fight a bit. He becomes the stalker for the greater part of the round. 10-9 Lopez

Round 4: Ortiz’ best round of the fight. Won all 4 scoring categories. Even played some defense. 10-9 Ortiz

Round 5: After the rabbit punch, Lopez unleashes fury on Ortiz. Though Ortiz has his moments, Lopez finishes the round very strong. 10-9 Lopez

Round 6: Closest round of the fight, IMO. I’ll give it to the house fighter. 10-9 Ortiz

Round7: Lopez backs up Ortiz for the second half of the round. Robert Garcia can be seen ringside enjoying Josesito’s violent uppercuts. 10-9 Lopez

Round 8: Another close round. Lopez lands clean body shots. 10-9 Lopez

Round 9: Victor is winning the first two minutes and Lopez closes the round strong, breaking Victor Ortiz’ jaw with a left hook and further damaging it with a right hand and Ortiz is doing a back pedal with his hands at his hips just before the bell rings. 10-9 Ortiz

86-85 Josesito Lopez

Victor Ortiz complains to his corner that his jaw is broken. Trainer Danny Garcia presses him to move on causing some commotion. Referee Jack Reiss comes over and Victor Ortiz himself, almost being blocked by his own cornermen, asks Reiss to stop the fight because his jaw is broken. Josesito Lopez pulls off the upset. I’ve never been happier for one of Al Haymon’s clients.

**My only concern is referee Pat Russell who only gave Josesito Lopez 2 rounds. I can’t see that score by even giving Victor Ortiz all of the close rounds (2,3,6,8). Luckily this fight was decided in the ring and we can avoid another scoring controversy.

In honor of all those who have been poster-ized.

In honor of all those who have been poster-ized.

Tim Bradley has a question…

Tim Bradley has a question…

Before the hand wrap scandal that clouded the career of Antonio Margarito, you’d be lying if...

Before the hand wrap scandal that clouded the career of Antonio Margarito, you’d be lying if you said you didn’t have the utmost respect for the Tijuana Tornado. A fighter’s fighter. A man who was given nothing, but took everything he could when he faced his opponents in the squared circle. A welterweight, that the top fighters in the division, wanted absolutely nothing to do with.

In the mid 2000s where the stacked division was full of prize fights, Margarito was a relatively unknown slugger from Tijuana. He suffered a few losses early in his career but the way it should be. Never shielded or coddled. Never ducked or handpicked opponents. He just fought. While the top welters of his era were enjoying huge paydays, Margarito fought young, tough fighters: Sebastian Lujan, Daniel Santos, Josh Clottey, Kermit Cintron, and Paul Williams. Never really given that big fight until Miguel Cotto gave him the opportunity.

Whether or not he ever actually used illegal hand wraps against Miguel Cotto, well, only those closest to Margarito really know. However, much of that respect that we all had for Margarito was lost when he was actually caught using an illegal substance for his wraps. His license was suspended and his trainer/father figure, Javier Capetillo, was barred for life as a licensed trainer in the US.

Do I doubt Antonio Margarito knew of the illicit wraps? Hardly. For what was possibly the biggest fight/s of his life, I don’t doubt it one bit. The question I asked myself is: If someone you see as a father, told you to do something you that goes against what you believe morally, would you do it? And though I would never agree or condone such an act, I can see why he may have done it.

This is where I can look at Antonio Margarito’s career, which has been completely discredited by some members of the media, and say that I do respect him and his work. For it wasn’t his big punching power or knockouts (though he certainly punched) that won him fights. It was his relentless pressure, his heart, and his chin that were his greatest assets. Antonio Margarito hit hard enough to beat you. Just ask his sparring partners.

I say this with great comfort now that Miguel Cotto has obtained his revenge. There IS, however, a doubt in my mind that tells me Margarito did wear those wraps against Cotto back in 2008. I can’t prove it, nobody can. However, we can appreciate what we do know and that is the career of Antonio Margarito.

Many of us gained tremendous respect for Antonio Margarito over the years and then suddenly lost most, if not all of it. I can certainly say that I have gained some of that respect back. Especially after his 12 round drubbing at the hands of Manny Pacquaio that jeopardized his career and his vision and I certainly gained more with his defeat by the 154 lb king Miguel Cotto.

It was a tremendous career for a tremendous fighter. Thank you for the great fights, Tony.

Caption this photo

Caption this photo

Pac-Marquez III-Anatomy of the 10 Point Must System

The four categories of scoring a boxing match under the “10 point must” scoring system are as follows:

25%-Clean punches

25%-Effective aggression

25%-Ring Generalship

25%-Defense

Cleaner punches: Marquez. He picked his shots carefully, he was more efficient, and he rung Manny’s bell with lead rights and uppercuts. His left hooks to the body had the most effect on the fight, IMO. (However, body punches don’t seem to mean anything to judges nowadays.) Manny landed more punches but many were glancing shots and honestly Marquez didn’t seem bothered by any.

Pacquiao hands down was the aggressor in the fight. It seemed at first he was looking to counter Marquez because it was widely documented by Ariza, that they were expecting Marquez to come in for a KO. It was certainly not the case. Marquez had the size but the plan was the same. React to the more aggressive Manny Pacquaio.

Ring generalship basically means who is controlling the flow and pace of the fight. The fight went clockwise all night, Manny never seemed to be able to cut the ring off (as Freddie roach was telling him to do so in between rounds). Manny’s left was a non-factor in the fight. Marquez maintained the outside position and circled away from Manny’s power. Manny had some success in rounds 6 and 7 cutting off the ring but only for moments. Makes you wonder how much the panicking of Buboy and Ariza screaming in Pac’s ears have an effect on Manny listening to the chief in his corner. My advice to Ariza and Buboy are to stay quiet in between rounds, Freddie knows.

Defense. Marquez’ defense is his offense. Unlike much of today’s American fighter who uses his legs to escape punches, Marquez will stick you with counters and keep you off balance all night. That’s exactly what he did. He caught Manny’s shots, he countered, and feinted Manny into throwing wild punches.

CompuBox, thank God, is not a category. Crowd reaction is not a category. Title holders are given no advantage(Pac-Marquez 2). Consider the above categories and judge the fight for yourself.

*I scored the fight 8-4 for Marquez. 2 of the rounds I gave Marquez were close. I could see a draw but 115-113 is a stretch. 116-112 is aberration.

Boardwalk (Empire) After Dark

It’s clear the moves being made behind the scenes in boxing will be somewhat of a power shift. Much like “Boardwalk Empire,” it makes you wonder who will take the power seats of those left by the old regime. I imagined a loose correlation between HBO’s “Boarwalk Empire” and the boxing department at HBO. Some relationships may not be to the ‘T’, but this is my Boardwalk Empire/HBO boxing connection (suggestions are more than welcome):

Commodore: Bob Arum-Built the empire. Back to seize power in the market, feuding with Al Haymon

Jimmy Darmody: Todd DuBoef-Bob’s step-son, intelligent, loyal, up-and-comer. Has friends on both sides.

Nucky Thompson: Al Haymon-Big shot caller at HBO though the tides may be turning. Hit a rough patch but the public is waiting for his next big move.

Eli Thompson: Sam Watson-Al Haymon’s minion, though seems to want more for himself. Which is why he always insists on being in front of the camera.

Chalky White: Floyd Mayweather-Al Haymon’s partner in crime, does the leg work of the operation.

Al Capone: Ken Hershman-You get the “feeling” he’s gonna be running things soon.

Mickey Doyle: Lou DiBella-naive and questionable in his approach, seems to be pissing off every major player. Technically works for Al Haymon (Nucky) but for how long?

Rothstein: Oscar de la Hoya-Has the power and knows how to fix a thing or two. Has all the resources at his disposal.

Luciano: Richard Schaeffer-Ambitious, cunning, opportunistic. Have a feeling he has what it takes to change the game, if his boss gets out of his way.

I’m sure I’ve missed a few or some of you have better comparisons. Send your feedback.

Trashed all my Star Power jokes.
